The festival was so popular and well-received in 2023 that Open Gardens SA is excited to share this next chapter, where passionate and knowledgeable owners will welcome visitors into their private, productive gardens.
The gardens on display vary in size and style. Some cover large areas capable of producing substantial quantities of fruit, nuts, and vegetables, while others showcase ingenious ways to get the most out of smaller spaces.
Visitors will see various approaches to productive gardening, including vertical frames, netted and enclosed patches, a wide range of wicking beds, specialised irrigation systems, espaliered fruit trees, and effective methods for dealing with challenges from birds and possums.
Some gardens have developed naturally over the years, while others have been carefully planned and constructed according to the owners’ vision, reflecting a balance of design, function, and productivity.
Jamie McIlwain from Open Gardens SA says the festival emphasises knowledge sharing.
"Garden owners will be on hand to discuss composting, soil care, seed saving, and other techniques that support productive growing," said Jamie. "There'll be talks, demonstrations, and informal conversations that provide practical insights into food production, sustainability, and self-sufficiency."
Whether it’s a dedicated patch or integrating productive plants throughout your whole garden, there will be countless ideas and solutions for growing your own food.
The proceeds from this event will be donated to Food On The Table, supporting this amazing organisation to provide meals to people in need here in South Australia.
Festival passes are $25 for four gardens, and $50 for an all-garden pass.
GROLIFE, SALIFE, and HELLO SA proudly support the event.
