Captivated by the picturesque views of the densely wooded hillside across the valley and keen to create a lovely garden, the Wrights acquired the generous 1.5-acre sloping block 23 years ago.
Their new home was sited towards the top of the hill to take advantage of the superb views and to overlook the delightful garden that now spills downwards from the house.
Retaining walls were added to create several level terraces linked by sets of steps and a network of paths that crisscross the slope, weaving between garden beds crammed with myriad plants. The top terraces are lawned, and planting between the levels is lush and colourful, with a collection of roses in pastel pink and peachy tones, complemented by brightly flowered perennials, including many salvias.
A little further down the slope, the mood changes and Australian natives and South African species create a medley of varying flower and foliage colours, shapes and textures. Architectural plants, including unusual conifers and interesting eucalypts, contrast with billowy grasses, mounds of distinctive foliage and the solid form of clipped spheres. These varied plant combinations create a rich tapestry of many shades of green, with touches of burgundy, silver, and gold, and some flowering species adding pops of seasonal colour.
The lower level is grassed and park-like, planted with deciduous trees chosen to provide summer shade and autumn colour. The area is dotted with freshwater springs and several rocky ponds, which are kept topped up by fresh water that continuously trickles from beneath the soil surface.
Entry is via Bradshaw Avenue, and from this lower level, paths meander through the garden and up the slope to the top terrace, with views of the garden and surroundings.
NOTE: This garden has many steep slopes, steps, and uneven paths, so take care
