With a passion for growing their own food, Peg and Jules worked closely with a landscape designer to create a productive patch tailored to their specific needs. Rather than a traditional vegetable plot, this significant space has been carefully integrated into the broader landscape, nestling seamlessly amongst the existing garden.
Raised vegetable beds form part of the retaining walls, giving structure and purpose to the design. Within the productive area, bespoke raised timber and galvanised beds in a variety of shapes and sizes provide both functionality and visual interest. On the middle terrace, a chook shed and a versatile ‘she shed’ form an outdoor room, where table grapes and wisteria climb overhead, creating shade, fragrance, and charm. Below this level, hidden from view, sits a large water tank that harvests and stores rainwater from the house, ensuring the garden remains sustainable through the seasons.
Diversity is at the heart of this productive space. A hedge of citrus, numerous fruit trees, a beehive, and herbs growing among the stone retaining walls bring texture and variety. A whimsical ‘pumpkin palace’ and the dedicated vegetable beds complete the picture, producing an abundance of food throughout the year.
What is grown here does not go to waste. Freshly picked produce is eaten at its best, while the surplus is cooked, frozen, preserved, or generously shared with family, friends, and neighbours. Visitors to the garden will also find inspiration in the preserving recipes available in the garden notes, showcasing how harvests can be enjoyed long after the growing season has passed.
This is not just a productive garden, but a carefully crafted, living landscape—one that celebrates sustainability, creativity, and the simple joys of homegrown food.
