Owners Annette and Bill set out to achieve that when establishing their garden.
The Glasshouse Garden is on an elevated hillside on a corner block with views through stringy barks to the lower foothills. Terraces were formed to use the slope, and several informal garden rooms were created.
Entry is from the side road, and a winding path, flanked by several ‘Chanticleer’ pear trees, leads down to the front of the house to a small, pretty rose garden known as ‘The Terrace'. An exuberant Pierre de Ronsard rose clothes the veranda wall and beyond, an arch of yellow Pandorea vine hangs over a table and chairs - one of many places to sit and enjoy the garden.
The surrounding garden beds and the bank sloping to the road are dotted with eucalypts and plants that are water-wise yet lush and leafy in appearance. Known as ‘The Wild Wood’, a thriving mound of velvet groundsel with its huge sculptural leaves, salvias, plectranthus, bromeliads, osteospermum, and agapanthus flourish throughout the seasons. ‘The Sanctuary’ is a lawned area bordered with beds where vibrant red Irisine contrasts dramatically with the surrounding verdant green growth.
Behind the house, a productive garden has beds of herbs and vegetables. Steps lead to more raised beds, fruit trees, a chicken coop and the cute glasshouse that gives the garden its name.
Above the vegetable gardens at the highest point is another sitting spot with views over the garden to the bushland beyond.
A well-planned, stylish and productive garden!
