The vivid red blooms of the Kordes rose ‘Florentine’ cover an archway and gate, both decorated with sprays of ornate metal rose flowers and foliage, making a characteristic entrance to Christine’s Cottage Garden.
Over 80 roses grow in garden beds, over arches and cover fences. Among them are a vast and varied selection of flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. Daylilies, diosma, geraniums, anemones, poppies, lavender, cannas, and a collection of iris jostle for space and produce an amazing display of brilliant colour and perfume throughout the year—but in spring, the show is spectacular!
The garden is divided into three sections: the sunny front garden, made private with a plumbago hedge and picket fence, is bordered with meandering garden beds and dotted in the lawn are several log-edged island beds – all are crammed with plants! Mosaic stepping-stones lead to the side garden, where trees create a sheltered environment ideal for shade-loving species to thrive. The third area is the back garden, which has been cleverly laid out to trick the eye – the boundaries have been blurred with dense planting, and the borrowed landscape of trees in a neighbouring reserve used to create an illusion that the garden extends beyond the actual fence line.
The garden won the 2023 Best Urban Residential Garden category in the Onkaparinga Council’s 2023 Mayor’s Garden competition, acknowledging the time, hard work and planning that went into making this very pretty cottage garden.
