A bush garden in harmony with nature

Many years living and working in remote areas of Northern Territory has given Jane and Peter an appreciation of the beauty, diversity and resilience of Australian plants and since retiring to Springton 15 years ago, has inspired them to landscape their block using native flora.

The densely planted garden begins on the verge where a rustic seat has been placed to provide a rest spot for those using the Lavender Federation Walking and Cycling trails that pass through the gum studded hills adjacent to the property. Inside the front fence paths weave through layers of foliage – trees, some with beautiful trunks and bark, provide height, dappled shade and frost protection to the collection of shrubs and ground covers below. Several compact ‘Euky Dwarf’ eucalypts produce an abundance of vibrant, nectar rich flowers and are much loved by the birds and bees.

The paths wind up the slope and behind the house to a pond, its rocky edges softened with lush native grasses. Peter has given the garden personality and character with rustic art made from rocks, weathered timber, old signs and memorabilia, each piece with a story behind it!

The extensive range of species in the garden demonstrates the amazing and varied foliage, form and flowers found in Australian plants. Spring is showtime and after this year’s good rains, the garden will be spectacular. Eremophilas in every imaginable colour, fluffy wattles in shades of pale lemon to gold, correas, grevilleas, kangaroo paw, bottle brush, banksias and many uncommon species will be flowering prolifically.
