Tipsy Hill is an extensive garden evocative of Mediterranean landscapes with a characteristically Australian flavour. Set high on a hill surrounded by vineyards, the garden offers picturesque views of the valley and Willunga Hills.
Bec Hardy purchased the property, including the vineyard, eight years ago. Now that her young family is living there, the garden has been adapted to suit their needs while keeping its aesthetic charm. Gardener Marian McDuie has made several changes to enhance the garden’s climate compatibility and water efficiency. This includes relocating some existing plants and grouping them with others that have similar water needs to create microclimates and more efficient watering zones. Australian natives and hardy, drought-tolerant plants from Mediterranean regions have been introduced, too.
Winding paths and steps link several almost secret areas with seating spots positioned to take advantage of the magnificent views. Tall pines and the numerous trees on the property shelter many bird species that call the garden home. The veranda, which overlooks the swimming pool, offers stunning views over the vineyard and beyond, and the long pergola covered with lush wisteria foliage makes a wonderful, cool, shady place to enjoy refreshments.
Bougainvilleas, oleanders, cannas, flowering gums, yuccas in flower and sedums add bold colour and contrast with the varied colours of duranta, iochromas, hibiscus, plumbago, salvias, solanums and succulents with hedges adding a touch of formality. The property takes its name from the lovely 6th-century Chinese tea rose Rosa ‘Tipsy Imperial Concubine’ named after Yang Guifei, a consort to a Tang dynasty Emperor and one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. There are several of these roses in the garden.
