Framed with a traditional picket fence, Cherrywood’s pretty cottage-style front garden perfectly complements the storybook look of the 1880s stone and brick home, but gives no hint of what lies behind! The one-acre block slopes downwards, and the back of the house is two-storeyed, with views over the terraced garden, its layers of manicured greenery, and the tall trees that enclose the property.

Several tiers, each with its own distinctive character, are connected with wide sets of steps. The view looking down from the house and the adjacent brick-paved patio is lush and leafy, with a wide variety of foliage plants, closely clipped hedges, topiary domes, and many trees that together create a tapestry of textures in countless shades of green. Several focal points draw the eye and contribute to the garden’s charisma—an eye-catching feature on a lower level is the formal lily and goldfish pond with a small fountain, which adds the soothing sound of trickling water to the tranquil atmosphere.

There are several inviting places to sit and enjoy the garden. An elegant gazebo is nestled amongst the trees, and a small deck cleverly conceals a disused spa, both offering lovely vantage points for sitting and viewing the garden. Beyond the formal area, a fern gully leads through a wooded area underplanted with lush tree ferns and shade-loving plants thriving in the dappled light.

The green-on-green planting gives the garden a unified, harmonious feel. Still, in summer, the blue flowers of agapanthus and several garden urns planted with annuals add subtle pops of colour that enliven the space.

Cherrywood is a charming garden, shady and cool, green and serene!
