Beneath the Scented Canopy is a cheerful cottage-style garden surrounding a classic 1930s Art Deco home. Created with flair and hard work by keen gardener Heather with help from partner Paul, the garden is eclectic and colourful, filled with flowers, foliage, fruit trees and edible plants. In spring, drifts of vivid blue self-seeded larkspurs, roses, perennials and succulents make a charming fusion of flowers and foliage as they jostle for space behind the low box hedges that edge the garden beds.
In both the front and back gardens, trees are a valued feature – an ornamental pear shelters the front of the house and a majestic old lemon-scented gum with a striking, smooth white trunk towers over the back garden, providing dappled shade to the mix of flowering and productive plants. Another notable tree is the Japanese flowering apricot, Prunus mume – covered with highly fragrant pink blossom in winter; by spring, its long, pendulous branches are in leaf and extend to the ground, creating a graceful leafy green canopy.
Red brick paths loop through the garden beds and fruit trees, popping in wherever there is a suitable sunny spot, including a fig, lemon, orange, apple, and pomegranate. Every piece of the compact block is utilised – pots hang from the fence in the narrow alleyway beside the house, and a brick wall has been transformed with Chinese star jasmine trained in a criss-cross diamond pattern. Hedges and climbing plants camouflage the fences and blur the boundaries, creating a feeling of enclosure, and quirky garden art is dotted throughout.
A much-loved, beautifully maintained and very pretty garden!
