OGSA closes for winter

Around 25,000 visitors attended South Australian gardens during the past 12 months, with approximately $150,000 returned to charities over the Spring 2016 to Autumn 2017 season.

The South Australian based success story, which began in 2015 after the national open garden organisation folded, is now resting over winter but a new program will be ready to kick off from late August.

Garden owners shared in more than $94,000 in gate takings with the majority donated to charities and an additional $58,000 was raised through extras like morning teas, plant stalls and produce sales.

Open Gardens SA Chairperson Vick Winnall said the staggering figures showed just how much the organisation has been embraced in South Australia.

“We are truly humbled by the support which would not exist without the patronage of the general public, the work of our volunteers and especially, our garden owners,” she said. “A huge range of charities have already benefitted from their generosity.

“Our garden owners are such a generous bunch and their support for charities is truly amazing. We will be extending that generosity as an organisation by supporting gardening programs throughout the SA community.”

“A deserving program for 2017 has been identified and we will be announcing more in the new season.”

Open Gardens SA has already started the ball rolling with a $2500 grant to the Little Sprouts program at the Botanic Garden earlier this year.

Look out for the new website which will be launched along with the new Spring program in August, 2017.
