Adelaide Day Centre Donation

Open Gardens SA recently made a $10,000 donation to an amazing Adelaide homeless program which encourages homeless men to tend gardens with the produce being used to create nutritious meals.

The organisation has three gardens in the city, including the Roma Mitchel Gardens at the Adelaide Gaol.

Meade Veggie

Vegetables are used to create nutritious, organic foods for their day centre, while other vegetables are turned into ready meals for those living in hostels where no proper cooking facilities are available.

The centre also does a soup run each night made from the produce grown in the group of gardens. Gardening and the food grown helps these men cope with their situation and gives them purpose.  It also aids in combatting the chronic ill health of many living on the streets through providing good nutrition.

Members of Open Gardens SA recently toured the Roma Mitchell Gardens with members of the program and were completely amazed by the work being done.

The grant is just one way Open Gardens SA is giving back to other charities and supporting gardening initiatives that really make a difference.
