Description

Please note: this garden is open on Saturday January 26 ONLY.

Aldgate Railway Cottage was built by Cornish railway workers in 1855 (four years before the local pub!). Twelve years ago, after 50 years of neglect it was restored from an abandoned graffitied ruin to become a charming stone residence surrounded with a leafy country garden. Only the tall trees were on the site when the owner with courage and foresight, began the renovation but today the garden is filled with foliage and pretty cottage plants.

At the stylish entrance, agapanthus and a pair of tall elegant cordylines flank the railway crossing styled gates; close by a railway sleeper path is another nod to the former life of the property. Trees, particularly several huge poplars, create a cool green feel with fragrant flowering plants adding touches of colour and perfume. Stone has been used to construct retaining walls and to edge the garden beds and gravel paths that traverse the property. Hedges and clipped plants, including 70 Cupressus ‘Leighton Green’ add interest and provide privacy.

A winter creek and small billabong, a quaint stone wishing well, statuary, pots and arbours draped with climbing plants add interest while the secluded nooks, the pizza oven and alfresco eating area make the garden a pleasure to live in.

An historic cottage, an appealing garden and a picturesque setting – a must see!

Please note: there is a small water-filled billabong and some steps.

Size: 2 acres, 0.8ha

The nominated charity for this garden is: Fred Hollows.
