Description

The Olives is a formal European garden carved from farmland on the outskirts of Yankalilla. The attractive 1858 house and the namesake 160-year-old olive trees that line the 4-acre rural property have been carefully restored by the owners.

Iron gates set in stone work open to a driveway leading to the historic two-story stone and brick house and a more recent garden cottage. The stonework by a local stonemason is repeated throughout the garden in retaining walls, the pond edging, pool paving and also features in the quaint potting shed and raised circular herb bed.

Paths lined with roses, geraniums and agapanthus lead from the drive to the circular pond and surrounding garden which features deciduous trees and shrubs selected for their autumnal show of russet, red and golden leaves.

A bank of red and white geraniums makes a stunning backdrop to the pond which is on a lower level and is reached via an impressive flight of stone steps. A small landing provides a viewing platform over the water to the contemporary sculpture centred among waterlilies in the pond.

An interesting and historic garden with Mediterranean plantings.

Extra activities: The owner is happy to talk about the garden and general restoration of property, as well as harvesting of olives and pressing for oil.

Size: 4 acres, 1.6ha.

The nominated Charity for this garden is the Nursing Scholarship fund established by the owners with Ashford Hospital.
