An abundance of colourful flowering frangipanis, hibiscus and bougainvillea, ornamental gingers, palms, yuccas, cordylines, cannas and cycads give a Balinese resort feel to the garden at Tropical Cooinda.

The site is very steep but has been terraced and as well as tropical plantings on each level, the theme has been continued with a number of structures decorated with interesting artefacts brought home from holidays in exotic locations.

The outside toilet is remarkable – built with small stones collected on holidays around Australia, the five-sided outhouse is typically Balinese in character with ornate, carved double doors and a traditional ornamental finial on top! Even the chooks live the resort-style life – their beautiful little house is decorated with intricate carved panels as are several other small buildings throughout the garden.

Beside the house is a swimming pool with the surrounding retaining walls disguised with render to look like a rock formation complete with a waterfall. Behind are steps leading high up to a vegetable garden and sitting area with stunning views over the roof of the house to nearby Black Hill.

Planted throughout are unusual plants, many with the bold colourful foliage characteristic of tropical gardens. Also cleverly incorporated are a number of tough water-wise species that look lush and luxuriant but cope well with hot dry summers.

A delightful and amusing garden with good planting – all landscaping and construction in the garden is the work of the owners!

Size: 1250 sqm; 0.3 acres.

The nominated charity for this garden is: The Wombat Awareness Organisation who will give talks at 11am & 2pm each day
