A well planned and planted waterwise garden that has been significantly modified in recent years to fine tune its Mediterranean character. The layout has been altered to reduce lawn space and to refine the plant selection to truly suit the South Australian climate.

The shady front garden appears leafy and green and well suits the lovely 1920s villa, but the plants have all been carefully selected for their robust and resilient qualities.

Behind the house, areas of gravel, a long curving gabion seat and rustic iron sculptures add interest and a contemporary feel to the garden which has been designed for family living, entertaining and low water use. The owners’ interest in Mediterranean gardening is evident in the plant selection which includes salvias, succulents, grasses and shrubs, some clipped into hedges or ball shapes to give definition and contrast to the plantings.

Trees and tall hedges give a sense of enclosure with a huge golden elm taking centre stage and providing essential summer shade. An outdoor entertainment area, seats scattered throughout, a swimming pool and fire pit add to the relaxed feel of the garden. There are two raised garden beds for vegetables, and various fruit trees.

Seldom watered, this garden demonstrates the value of climate compatible plant selection.

Extra activities: Morning and afternoon tea will be provided by the SACWA Stirling Branch. Proceeds will support rural SA families battling drought conditions.
There will also be plant sales.

Please note: There is a swimming pool and access to the garden is through the pool area; there will be a person stationed in the pool area. As the house is on busy Cross Road, parking in nearby Cambridge Terrace is suggested.
