Noelaini is a coastal garden just 15 metres from the beach on the foreshore at North Shields. For most of the year the front receives the full force of the salt laden southerly winds, yet a garden has been created using plants chosen to tolerate the tough conditions. Westringias, coprosma, rosemary, conifers, strelitzias, daisies, petunias and a large New Zealand Christmas Tree all grow successfully in the inhospitable environment.

The more protected back garden is very different and is full of colour and interest. Roses are planted throughout - in the lawn a standard Iceberg rose surrounded with a circle of mixed coloured ranunculi makes a lovely feature, and there is a bed of roses with flowers in a variety of colours and a row of ‘Shocking Blue’ standards.

The raised stone garden beds are filled with iris, canna lilies, geraniums, osteospermum, salvias, pelargoniums, euphorbias and Federation daisies. A collection of many different coloured Alstroemeria is thriving, and clumps of spring bulbs are throughout the garden.

A white cedar tree shades bromeliads, ferns, coleus, iresine, and both cream and orange flowered clivias. A bridge over a fishpond leads to a shade house filled with cymbidium orchids.

Noelaini shows that strong wind, spray, salt and sand need not be deterrent to having a successful garden.
