Description

The Bonney garden is a ‘gardener’s garden’ full of interesting plants grown with care and expertise. One hundred and fifty roses give a stunning display with additional colour provided by the rich under-planting of perennials and annuals.

The garden begins on the colourful verge, crammed with plants having low water requirements. Lavenders, daisies, salvias and sun-loving osteospermum in almost every colour of the rainbow make a vivid display. The sloping block is terraced, and colour-themed garden areas are linked with walkways. The lavender walk is lined with pink roses and nine different coloured cultivars of Spanish lavender.

Along the driveway, standard Just Joey roses are combined with a complementary toned, smaller bush variety known as Fruitee. Gold Bunny is spectacular on an arch, and wisteria climbs over the carport. Around the back, a spirea and Geraldton wax cascade over a retaining wall and make a striking display when in flower. Under the pergola, shade lovers including ferns, begonias, bromeliads and hoyas enjoy the protected conditions.

There is a vegetable garden and several fruit trees. Succulents, many with dramatic leaf shapes, are scattered throughout – there are senecios, crassulas, kalanchoe, echeverias, sedums, aloes and 12 or so different forms of aeoniums. Trees provide shade, shelter and a sense of maturity to the garden.

1200sqm, 0.3 acres, 0.12ha.

The nominated charity for this garden is the University of the Third Age Garden Club at Modbury.
